CMSCA In The News
The McClintock Middle School Chess Club, sponsored by CMSCA, was featured in The Charlotte Observer on January 2, 2011. The article, “Chess Club Lets Students Pursue a New Interest”, detailed the club held every Tuesday evening at Christ Lutheran Church, and mentioned former CMSCA president, Susan Flynn, CMSCA instructor Jon Munnell, and scholastic players J.P. Flynn, Josh Mu and Steve Wang.
In its October 1, 2010 edition, the Matthews-Mint Hill Weekly profiled the CMSCA’s need for funding and expansion into schools outside the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools system in “Chess Association Turns to Private Schools to Stay Alive.” The online version will be available soon.
One of CMSCA’s founding fathers and former CMSCA President, Ken Baxter, was recently inducted in the North Carolina Chess Association’s Hall of Fame. The Mooresville Tribune profiled Ken in a feature article, “He’s a Champion for Chess”, on September 22, 2010.
In its September 17, 2010 edition, the South Charlotte Weekly profiled the CMSCA and its need for funding in “Checkmate!” The online version will be available soon.
In its September 2010 online edition, Charlotte Magazine featured an article on the CMSCA, “Lauded Chess Program Loses Funding”.
The CMSCA was featured on the front page of the Local section in The Charlotte Observer on August 29, 2010. The article, “CMS Budget Cuts Leave Chess Clubs Down and Out”, detailed the CMSCA’s loss of funding.
The Charlotte Observer‘s community affiliate, Cabarrus News, profiled top scholastic player, Samuel Xin, in “He Likes Tennis… And Loves Chess”. The article, published on May 2, 2010, included quotes from CMSCA instructor Chris Mabe. (Click here to read this article on cmsca.org.)
On January 17, 2010, The Charlotte Observer covered the CMSCA’s Grade Championship, in which 151 students competed in twelve sections. The article mentioned scholastic players Joe Biernacki, Keith Brown and Joshua Holcombe.
In May of 2008, Charlotte Magazine published an excellent article called “Of Kings and Kids” featuring Charlotte’s brightest young chess players and the CMSCA at the North Carolina Scholastic Chess Championship. The article mentioned CMSCA instructors, John Lane and Chris Mabe, and top scholastic players Joshua Mu and Samuel Xin.
On April 15, 2007, The Charlotte Observer profiled scholastic player, Samuel Xin, in “Samuel Xin Knows How to Get Around the Squares, with quotes from CMSCA instructor Chris Mabe.
In 2007, The Elkin Tribune profiled CMSCA instructor, Chris Mabe, in “Boonville Native Crowned NC Chess Champion”. The article detailed Chris’ chess career through his win at the North Carolina State Chess Championship.
